Four Choices That Can Only be Sustained by Ignorance

Have you ever seen people making choices you consider dead on arrival? A choice you could not make had you been in their shoes. A choice you know is nothing but a heap of miseries to its best in the long run. A choice that will make them write additional chapters of a book that should be considered sufficient as it is—lamentations.

What makes people go wayward and make choices which result in maximum regrets and premium tears? Is there something that can be done to make a difference? Not all who smoke are daring liver cirrhosis. Not all promiscuous people are daring genital warts and brokenness. Not all drunkards are daring broken families, underperformance at work, or general uselessness. Not all impious renegades are daring God, defying his authority. So where is the problem?

A lot of wrong and potentially catastrophic choices are sustained by ignorance. A lot of people are not well-informed about many things. Even great scholars and geniuses are only masters in their respective areas and nothing else. Most people do not know what they are supposed to know, which makes a great difference in life. Ignorance is the ingredient that sustains a lot of bad decisions that make life unbearable. If the drunkard, the immoral, the lazy, the rebellious, etc., knew the result of their positions, they could have made a different choice.

The following are four examples of choices that can only be sustained by ignorance:

  1. Wrong Career

Have you seen people changing their careers after finishing their undergrad? Or people who are enduring to be in positions that others just admire? Worse still, some people are just very talented and thoughtful and are the first resort when solutions are needed but cannot thrive in their specific career path. In all of these cases, ignorance at its best is demonstrated. What motivated you to choose your career?

An average human being is often ensnared by greed and financial prospects into the wrong careers. Just because you saw some engineer having a good time, you think you need to be one to enjoy life or conquer the budget constraints. Or maybe, those who studied procurement are being sought left-right, and center, then you are sold into the cheap market in hope of being sought after by potential employers. To be able to make the right career choice, you need information and some level of self-awareness to know what will work best for you. A good career taps your talents and areas of gifting, aims at problem-solving, and not merely preparing to be fixed into an opportunity by some relative who is connected.

  1. Wrong Spouses

Marriage is one of those things that affect your life for eternity. If you get a good spouse, you will have a little heaven on earth as you prepare for the real deal. I don’t mean that if you have a good spouse, there won’t be the vicissitudes of life, but a good partner will cheer you to the shore amidst the storm. A wrong spouse will make you face hell twice. Making a choice of a life partner is not so easy. In a well-organized system, where the principle of one woman and one man applies, the entire world is the sample size, and you need only one. Therefore to make the right choice, you need to have some information and a reliable checklist to ensure you operate in harmony with the law of selectivity. Ignorance makes one defy the counsels of the experienced to their destruction. Ignorance makes you trust feelings and not your mental faculties.

  1. Rebellion Against God
No, not now!

It is one thing to be skeptical about God and His works, but it is another to be rebellious. Questions like that of Pharaoh, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? [Exodus 5:2], and of the well-doing and ungrateful men that Job highlights, “Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power? Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them. Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?” [KJV Job 21:7-15] Anyone who rebels against God demonstrates less information about God. Nature testifies to God’s goodness. His mercy endures forever. He causes the sun to shine upon the just and the unjust and rains to shower blessings on everyone. If you doubt His existence, then you make yourself foolish by rebelling. Who rebels against an inexistent being?

  1. Error and False Worship.
Worshiping in vain

If there is something very difficult to instill or teach, it is an error. The reason is simple: to be able to teach error, you rely on the ignorance of the congregation. You can not serve it to a careful and studious lot because they know what to do and feel no moral obligation to listen to you. There are a lot of teachings and creeds that depend on the esotericism of truth to survive. As soon as the morning star of truth dawns on them, they refuse to be misused and abused in the bandwagon of error.  You can condition people to think that the dead can help the living or punish the living till they read that the dead knows nothing. An error cannot endure the truth. Untruth is easily sown broadcast, where information has been kept under the bed. But sooner or later, it must be uprooted by the unquestionable authority of true testimony.

To conscientiously follow error, you must be sustained by a veil of ignorance. There are a lot of people who are sincere but simply wrong. You’ve got to be sincere and correct. However sincere one is, who takes poison, he dies if no emergency medical attention is done.

Truth is the essence of life, growth, and decision-making. Seek always to be on the side of the informed. Life is good on that side. It is not necessarily easier, but her inhabitants are kept going by the assertion: “Hurt me with truth rather than false comfort hinged on error.”
